Risk factors

There are a range of factors that may put someone at higher risk of developing an eating disorder, however the way that risk factors interact and affect individuals vary.

Risk factors can include:  

  • having a close relative with an eating disorder or a mental health condition
  • having a history of dieting
  • type 1 diabetes
  • perfectionism and inflexibility with ways of behaving
  • history of an anxiety disorder
  • dissatisfaction with body image
  • being teased or bullied
  • limited social support 

Causes

Eating Disorders are not caused by one factor but may involve a variety of factors.

These factors can include:

  • genetics
  • biological
  • psychological factors including personality traits
  • emotional health
  • experiences of trauma
  • cultural and social influences
