Risk factors

Factors that influence the onset or development of sleep issues include:

Causes

Acute or short-term insomnia can be brought on by things like stress, a stressful life event, or short-term disruption to sleep.

Long-term insomnia is when symptoms are persistent and may be due to a medical condition, medications, or be associated with other conditions such as mental health disorders such as anxiety or depression, sleep-related disorders, use of stimulant substances (such as caffeine, alcohol, nicotine), disruptions to the natural sleep rhythms (shift work or travel), and poor sleep habits.
