Professional background

Internal Medicine Specialist (General Physician),Addiction Medicine Specialist

Dr Shelley is a dual-trained specialist in Addiction Medicine and Internal Medicine (General Physician), with a clinical background that uniquely positions her to manage complex and multidimensional cases across physical health, mental health, and substance use domains.

She completed three years of Basic Physician Training across the Sunshine Coast and Mater Hospital Brisbane, followed by three years of Advanced Training in Adult General and Acute Care Medicine through Mater Brisbane and the Gold Coast. She then undertook a further two years of Advanced Training in Addiction Medicine at Gold Coast University Hospital and Currumbin Clinic. This makes her the only physician in Queensland — and one of very few nationally — with formal specialist qualifications in both Internal Medicine and Addiction Medicine.

Dr Shelley has extensive experience in Psychiatry, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, and Acute Care Medicine, allowing her to bring a well-rounded and holistic approach to complex patient care.

In addition to her clinical work, Dr Shelley is an Adjunct Fellow at the University of Queensland and collaborates with the National Centre for Youth Substance Use Research. Her academic contributions support innovation in the understanding and treatment of substance use disorders, particularly among young people.

A strong advocate for gold-standard medical care for individuals with substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health conditions, Dr Shelley is committed to addressing both physical and psychological health in an integrated, compassionate, and evidence-based manner. She takes pride in delivering centralised and coordinated care that empowers patients to achieve better health outcomes and improved quality of life.

Dr Shelley has a particular interest in working collaboratively with General Practitioners, Psychiatrists, Hepatologists, and Chronic Pain Specialists, with a focus on the complex interface between medical, psychiatric, and substance use conditions.
