Professional background

Dr Amuthanila (Nila) Kasianandan is an experienced specialist psychiatrist, Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (FRANZCP) with an Advanced certificate of training in Addiction Psychiatry. Dr Nila is also due to obtain the Advanced certificate of training in Child and Adolescent psychiatry from the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists. She is also working as a Consultant Psychiatrist at the Child and Young Adults Service of the Townsville University Hospital. She is also a senior lecturer at the James Cook university.

Dr Nila relocated to Townsville, North Queensland in 2008 and since then has been providing her medical service to the local community of the greater region of Townsville and its adjoining rural and remote towns.

Dr Nila gained her basic medical degree from the prestigious Government Stanley Medical College of Southern India. She then practiced in the NHS of the United Kingdom for 3 years after successfully qualifying for the General registration (GMC). She recounts the experience helped her in gaining wider exposure to working with multicultural community and multidisciplinary team. Since relocating to Australia, Dr Nila has continued to expand her clinical knowledge and experience through accomplishing Advanced Diploma in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Masters in reproductive Medicine and Fellowship in General Practice (FRACGP).

Dr Nila then progressed to commit to increasing mental health awareness and improving the quality of living of those affected by mental health conditions.

Dr Nila is committed to provide a culturally safe and appropriate care for her consumers. She is a strong advocate for those suffering from intergenerational/transgenerational traumas. She values an evidence based, recovery oriented holistic model of care where she enjoys working in partnership with the patients, their families and other health professionals. With her shared experience and interest in perinatal care and infant mental health care by working as both a psychiatrist and an obstetric team doctor, she is also motivated to support families embrace and enrich a positive attachment with their children thereby building up a mentally healthy community.

Dr Nila will be supporting both outpatient and inpatient psychiatric services at the Townsville Private Clinic and welcomes referrals for the assessment and management of a broad range of psychiatric disorders, including depression, anxiety, psychosis, post-traumatic stress disorders, personality disorders and neurodevelopmental disorders.
