Funding and Coverage Options

Accessing quality mental health care shouldn’t be complicated.

At Aurora Healthcare, we offer a range of funding and coverage options to help you or your loved ones receive the support you need—without unnecessary stress. Whether you're a veteran, a frontline worker, privately insured, or exploring self-funded care, our team is here to guide you through the process.

Veterans and Current Defence Force Personnel

If you’ve served even a single day in the Australian Defence Force, you may be eligible for mental health support through the Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA). DVA White Card holders are entitled to fully funded hospital treatment for all mental health conditions—regardless of whether the condition is service-related. Aurora hospitals work closely with DVA and the ADF to ensure streamlined access to care, including inpatient and day programs tailored to your needs.

WorkCover Patients

Frontline workers such as Police, Ambulance, Fire & Rescue, and others facing work-related psychological injuries can access specialised support through WorkCover-approved programs. Many Aurora hospitals offer tailored treatment plans designed to help you recover and return to work safely. We’ll work with your case manager to ensure your care is covered and aligned with your recovery goals.

Privately Insured Patients

Aurora Healthcare has agreements with all major Australian health funds, making our hospitals a trusted and cost-effective option for mental health and rehabilitation care. If you hold private health insurance, you may be eligible for full or partial coverage of your hospital stay, including psychiatric and psychological services.

Key Facts for Privately Insured Patients:

  • Once-in-a-Lifetime Waiting Period Exemption: Patients can upgrade their hospital cover to include psychiatric services without serving the usual 2-month waiting period—available once per lifetime if they’ve held any level of hospital cover for at least 2 months.
  • Reduced Waiting Period for Pre-Existing Conditions: Mental health services only require a 2-month waiting period, even for pre-existing conditions—much shorter than the standard 12-month wait.
  • Out-of-Pocket Costs: With appropriate cover, hospital accommodation is included. Patients may only need to pay a hospital excess (typically up to $750), and for medications or services not intrinsic to care. Aurora hospitals participate in no-gap agreements, meaning minimal or no out-of-pocket costs for overnight admissions.

Self-Funded Options

If you’re not covered by insurance or WorkCover, self-funded packages may be available. These can be tailored to suit your clinical needs and financial circumstances. Speak with our team to explore flexible options that make accessing care more manageable.
