Risk factors

  • There are a range of factors associated with increased risk of experiencing stress including:
  • experiencing another mental health condition
  • experiencing trauma or significant life event
  • temperament/personality factors, low self-confidence, loneliness
  • lifestyle factors: poor sleep, unhealthy diet, lack of exercise, alcohol and other substance use  
  • occupational/work factors
  • social difficulties such as interpersonal conflict and relationship breakdown  
  • financial difficulties

Causes

Stress is influenced by both internal and external factors.

​Internal factors that are associated with the way you handle stress include your overall health and fitness, psychological wellbeing, nutritional status, and adequate sleep.

External factors are your environment, relationships, daily demands and challenges, and other life aspects.
