R U OK? Day: The Power of a Conversation

For 17 years, R U OK? Day has been inspiring Australians to reach out and ask a simple but powerful question: “Are you OK?” This initiative has helped raise the profile of mental health conversations and reminded us all that checking in can make a real difference.

At Aurora Healthcare, we see immense value in this day and the message it carries. We know that conversations like these can be a vital part of someone’s wellness journey—helping people feel heard, supported, and less alone.

But we also understand that starting these conversations isn’t always easy. That’s why, across our hospital network, we asked our staff to share their best tips for making these moments more approachable and meaningful. Here’s what they told us:

Start with empathy, not solutions

“You don’t need to fix anything. Just listen. Sometimes, that’s all someone needs.”

Pick the right moment

“Find a quiet time when you’re not rushed. A walk, a coffee break, or even a car ride can be perfect.”

Ask open-ended questions

“Instead of ‘Are you OK?’, try ‘How have you been feeling lately?’ or ‘What’s been on your mind?’”

Be consistent

“If someone doesn’t open up the first time, don’t give up. Keep showing you care.”

Know your limits

“You’re not expected to be a counsellor. If someone needs more support, encourage them to speak to a professional.”

These insights reflect the compassion and care that our teams bring to their work every day. We’re proud to support R U OK? and help carry its message forward—not just today, but every day.
