R U OK? Day: The Power of a Conversation

Today marks 17 years since the first R U OK? Day, a national movement that has done so much to raise awareness around the importance of checking in with those around us. At Aurora Healthcare, we love and support the work of R U OK?, especially their focus on encouraging conversations that can make a real difference in someone’s life.

These conversations are often a vital part of a person’s wellness journey. They can help someone feel seen, heard, and supported—especially when they’re struggling. And while today is a powerful reminder to ask, “Are you OK?”, we believe this message matters every day, not just once a year.

We also understand that starting these conversations can be hard. That’s why, across our Aurora network, we asked our staff to share their tips for starting meaningful conversations. Here’s what they told us:

Start with empathy, not solutions

“You don’t need to fix anything. Just listen. Sometimes, that’s all someone needs.”

Pick the right moment

“Find a quiet time when you’re not rushed. A walk, a coffee break, or even a car ride can be perfect.”

Ask open-ended questions

“Instead of ‘Are you OK?’, try ‘How have you been feeling lately?’ or ‘What’s been on your mind?’”

Be consistent

“If someone doesn’t open up the first time, don’t give up. Keep showing you care.”

Know your limits

“You’re not expected to be a counsellor. If someone needs more support, encourage them to speak to a professional.”

These insights reflect the compassion and care that underpin everything we do at Aurora. We believe that conversations—no matter how small—can make a real difference.

So today, and every day, we encourage you to reach out. Ask the question. Listen with care. And remember: you don’t need to be an expert to make a meaningful impact.
