Information on health fund coverage to access our services

Are you covered for our services?

Our hospitals accept patients with insurance from most private health funds, uninsured self-funded patients, DVA / ADF personnel or patients with approved Workers Compensation.

To access our specialty health services, patients can self-fund or claim their admission via a health fund (private health insurance or DVA funding).

We've summarised some key points you should know below about accessing our services

New private health insurance

Since 1 April 2018, health insurers have been providing greater access to mental health services by allowing people to upgrade their hospital cover without serving the usual two month waiting period for in-hospital psychiatric treatment. This means you can be covered 2 months after commencing a policy.

In some cases, you may be able to obtain an exemption from this waiting period.

For those with health funds, we recommend patients confirm any applicable out-of-pocket excess or gap costs directly with our hospitals.

Mental health waiver

Patients, including those with pre-existing conditions, who have been with a private health fund for two months can access a one-off mental health waiver to immediately upgrade their health fund cover to include mental health and addiction treatment.

For those with health funds, we recommend patients confirm any applicable out-of-pocket excess or gap costs directly with our hospitals.

Self funded Care

If you an do not have private health insurance, self-funded patient, you will need to pay full payment upfront on an estimated length of stay of at least one week in advance. Your hospital's admissions team will give you more information about this as part of the admission process.

DVA / ADF funding

Current and former full-time members of the ADF can receive fully funded mental health treatment through a DVA Gold or White Card, or ADF.

Our hospitals provide a range of psychiatric services to eligible veterans and war widows, including:

  • Pre-admission and discharge planning support
  • Assistance in the co-ordination and streamlining of your care
  • Referral to appropriate services and resources
  • General health and lifestyle education, and counselling

If you think you are eligible, our hospital admission teams will carry out a health fund check to assess your patients level of coverage in just a few short minutes.

You can also contact the DVA directly on 1800 550 457 to check eligibility.
