Aurora Podcast - Season 2 Episode 4

Earlier Than Expected: Understanding Younger Onset Dementia

Earlier Than Expected: Understanding Younger Onset Dementia

About this episode

In this episode of the Aurora Podcast, Dr Penny King, Psychogeriatrician at Aurora Robina Private Hospital, is joined by Anthony, who is living with Younger Onset Dementia (YOD), and his wife Monica, who shares her perspective as a partner and primary carer. Together, they explore the realities of recognising the early signs, navigating a complex diagnostic journey, and adapting to life after diagnosis.

Rather than focusing solely on clinical definitions, this conversation centres on the lived experience of Younger Onset Dementia and the important role GPs play in recognising symptoms, facilitating diagnosis, and supporting patients and their families throughout their journey.

About Younger Onset Dementia

Younger Onset Dementia refers to dementia diagnosed before the age of 65. While Alzheimer's disease remains the most common cause, Younger Onset Dementia can also result from conditions such as Frontotemporal Dementia, Vascular Dementia, Huntington's disease and Dementia with Lewy Bodies.

Diagnosis can be particularly challenging, with many patients experiencing delays of three to five years before receiving a definitive diagnosis. Symptoms are often mistaken for stress, burnout, depression, anxiety, menopause or relationship difficulties, particularly when memory problems are not the primary concern. Changes in personality, judgement, empathy, language and behaviour may be among the earliest indicators.

During the episode, Dr King discusses the latest developments in diagnosis, including cognitive assessment, specialist referral pathways, neuroimaging, biomarkers and emerging blood tests that are improving the ability to diagnose dementia earlier and more accurately.
