Eating Disorders

Treatment of eating disorders commonly involves a combined approach, adapted to needs and responses to treatment.

Treatments may include:

  • psychological therapy
  • medical intervention
  • psychiatry
  • dietetics
  • nutrition
  • other allied health treatments

Treatment and support can be individual and/or on a group basis. For children and adolescents, family therapy may also be recommended.

Psychological therapy can help with emotional wellbeing by addressing underlying factors such as body dissatisfaction, unhelpful patterns of thinking, extreme weight loss behaviours, and by improving emotional and behavioural coping skills. Medical care may be required to address any medical issues or complications.
